Bedsores is an original Chinese-language stage play script that explores an ordinary life shaped by care, memory, and the ways a person understands his past.

The play follows Fang Wenwu, who begins writing a memoir after learning of the death of his childhood friend and revolutionary comrade, Lou Zhujun. Soon after, the passing of his long-paralyzed wife, Yi Hong’er, brings him a sense of long-awaited “freedom,” while also prompting him to reconsider the meaning of the past forty years of his life. To others, Fang’s greatest achievement is that during decades of caregiving, he never allowed his wife to suffer a single bedsore—an act for which he is recognized as one of the city’s “Most Moving Figures.” Yet as he revisits these memories, this widely praised narrative reveals more complicated emotional and ethical dimensions.

Interweaving present-day scenes with fragments from Fang’s memoir, Bedsores examines how personal memory, moral judgment, and historical context shape the story of a life. Rather than focusing on grand events, the play looks closely at how an ordinary individual lives with responsibility, desire, and the passage of time.

This volume presents the published script of Bedsores, intended for directors, actors, students, and readers interested in contemporary Chinese-language theatre.
